Why gaming needs more than Mbps

Most real-time multiplayer games use less continuous bandwidth than video streaming. Their experience is often more sensitive to delays, inconsistent response times and local WiFi congestion. Download throughput still matters for installing large games, but a 500 Mbps speed reading cannot promise smooth online matches.

What the game selector actually checks

After a standard browser test, the tool compares five observations to illustrative thresholds for your chosen title: download capacity, upload capacity, HTTP response latency, jitter and failed requests. These are practical planning guides, not official publisher requirements, and they are not ping tests against Fortnite, Riot or other game-specific servers.

What is good gaming ping?

Lower round-trip latency usually means your actions can be reflected more quickly. Around 20–50 ms to the relevant server can feel responsive for many fast games, while higher readings may become noticeable. Our test measures HTTP response time to our own server, so it cannot predict exact in-game ping or matchmaking quality.

Cloud gaming is different

Cloud gaming streams video frames in response to your inputs. It typically needs more stable download bandwidth than conventional multiplayer and can be particularly sensitive to extra latency. Choose a cloud gaming profile in the selector, and test again at busy hours if your connection fluctuates.

How to reduce game lag

Try Ethernet if possible, limit simultaneous downloads, disable a slow VPN route where appropriate, and test at several hours. Compare in-game server-region latency with the browser test. If in-game ping is poor while our test is good, the path to the game server may be the key difference.

Important limitation

We do not send traffic to game publishers or measure actual matchmaking delay. Profiles are independent, illustrative criteria based on typical use cases and must not be mistaken for certified game compatibility.
