Why upload speed matters for video calls

Your device sends camera and microphone data upstream while receiving other participants downstream. A connection with a high download number but very low upload can still struggle with video meetings. Run a bandwidth test while other devices are idle, then repeat during your normal work hours.

Zoom video bandwidth examples

For the Zoom Web App, published group-meeting bandwidth guidance lists approximately 3.8 Mbps download and 3.0 Mbps upload for 1080p HD video. These figures can vary with layout, account features and the number of participants. Our Zoom activity profile uses these as directional reference points, not as a guarantee of Full HD availability.

What about Microsoft Teams or Google Meet?

Both platforms dynamically adjust to network quality and meeting settings. Our profile values are illustrative planning thresholds rather than official service-specific minimums. Use your organization’s recommended network guidance for managed meeting environments.

Reduce interruptions before an important call

Choose a stable WiFi location or a wired connection, stop uploading large files, avoid saturating your connection with background backups, and close unused video applications. If you experience audio gaps despite adequate speeds, pay attention to jitter and failed requests.

How to compare before and during a call

A test while the connection is idle establishes a baseline. A second test at a normal busy time can reveal contention, though running a speed test during a call may itself cause congestion. Use the lighter mode if data use or temporary disruption is a concern.
