WiFi speed versus internet speed
Your internet plan is the connection from your home to your provider, while WiFi carries traffic inside your home. WiFi is a shared radio link: distance, interference and older equipment can reduce throughput even when the ISP connection is working correctly.
How to run a meaningful WiFi bandwidth check
Choose the same test mode each time. Measure next to the router, then repeat from the room where performance seems slow. If practical, measure using Ethernet as a baseline. Do not compare a phone in a distant room to a new laptop beside the router and assume the connection is the only difference.
Common causes of slow WiFi
Thick walls and metal surfaces absorb signals, while nearby WiFi networks can compete for airtime. The 2.4 GHz band often reaches farther but can be more congested. The 5 GHz band often offers greater throughput at shorter distances, subject to the equipment and environment.
What your phone can and cannot tell you
Modern browsers may expose a rough effective connection type, but they generally cannot reliably identify whether your device is connected through WiFi or Ethernet. Our test does not claim to inspect your router or determine wireless signal strength. Compare actual transfer measurements with your own setup.
Practical improvements
Place the router in an open area, keep firmware updated, and try an appropriate WiFi band for the location. Where feasible, use Ethernet for devices sensitive to latency. Re-run the same measurement after each change so that improvements are based on evidence.
